How Online Sessions Work
Traditionally, counselling and psychotherapy has been delivered 'in the therapy room'. Today, with changes in lifestyle, work and family commitments, and so many people travelling for work, not to mention the technology now available to us, many people are seeing the benefits of accessing support online, in a way that fits into their busy lives.
I use the Zoom platform for online counselling sessions. As my client, you will receive a Zoom link via email, sent by me a few days prior to our agreed session. It will provide information on the date and time of the session and a link to the meeting 'room' we will use. Then at the date and time of the meeting you can access the 'room' by clicking on the link. You will enter into a 'waiting room', where I will provide access to the session and I'll see you there.
My advice is that you should be alone in a private, quiet place where you will not be overheard, and try to use headphones/earpods for added privacy. It is of vital importance that you are alone with me in the meeting, as therapy sessions are between two people - you and me - only.

If you already use Zoom and have a Zoom account, you should already be used to this way of working. However, you don't need a Zoom account to access the session, just use the link I send you and there should be no issues.

Below are some of the things to consider to see if it's right for you.
Confidentiality & Privacy
When working online, I work to the same professional standards as when working 'in the room'. I'll help you understand how you can maintain your own privacy when working at home or from some other location of your choice.

Flexibility
Do you travel a lot for work? Are you away from home a lot? Are you unable to get out? Are you having to balance many commitments? You can gain access to support when and where you want it.
Technology
If you have access to a smartphone, tablet or other computer and have an internet connection, you are good to go. However, if you are not great with technology, consider whether this is right for you. But I will help you to think this through.
Convenience
A great advantage for some people is that they have no need to travel to get counselling support. Childcare and family commitments can be accommodated more easily. You can access sessions from anywhere, as long as you can maintain your privacy when doing so.
Greater Choice of Therapist
You no longer need to find a therapist in your local area. Instead, you have a lot more choice, being able to contact therapists who work anywhere in the UK.

Accessibility
Making the journey for 'in the room' counselling may be a challenge for some, due to physical or sometimes psychological reasons. If you can't get out for whatever reason, online working may help. But consider what help you might need in order to use the necessary technology.
